The importance of NDT for Casting and Forging

What is Nondestructive Testing?

Non-destructive Testing (NDT) refers to the technology of evaluating internal or surface defects of the object being tested by physical or chemical means without destroying it.

What are the commonly used non-destructive testing technologies?

Commonly used non-destructive testing techniques include ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle testing, X-ray testing etc. Through timely non-destructive testing, accidents and losses caused by material defects can be avoided and the safety of production and use can be guaranteed.

What is Ultrasonic flaw detection?

Ultrasonic flaw detection is a testing method in non-destructive testing that defects within a material by propagating ultrasonic waves into the material being tested and receiving the signals reflected back.

Why do forged and cast products need nondestructive testing?

Casting and forging are common metal processing methods used to manufacture a wide variety of metal parts. However, the defects may occur during casting and forging processes, such as porosity, slag entrapment and cracks, which may reduce the strength and durability of the steel. In order to ensure the production of high quality and qualified products, non-destructive testing is widely used in the casting and forging industry.

In casting and forging, what important information can ultrasonic testing provide?

1.Defect Detection: Ultrasonic waves are capable of detecting minute defects such as porosity and slag entrapment. These defects may cause an increase in the material's brittleness or reduce its load-bearing capacity. Through ultrasonic flaw detection, these defects can be detected early and repaired accordingly, ensuring the production of high quality products.

2.Quality control: Ultrasonic flaw detection can fully inspect each workpiece in the casting and forging process to ensure the consistency of product quality.  Through regular ultrasonic flaw detection, any production problems can be detected and corrected in a timely manner, avoiding the emergence of sub-standard products.

3. Structural assessment: Ultrasonic flaw detection also evaluates the structural characteristics of products, including grain size, grain boundaries and phase transitions.  This information is important in determining the properties and range of application of products, and can help engineers and designers confirm the right materials and process parameters.
